Santa Cruz Affiliate Cup Competition

This past weekend I had the opportunity to compete in the 4th annual Santa Cruz Affiliate Cup Competition. My teammates were incredible. We spent the entire day together smiling, laughing, dancing, working hard, playing hard, supporting one another and most importantly supporting the other athletes and affiliates. It was incredibly memorable and inspiring and I am so honored to have had this opportunity.

Here is a picture that was taken right after we won the final heat.

Stress Less, Weigh Less

Yoga is so much more than a weight-loss program, but it has helped many people shed extra pounds, even some who have spent years trying to slim down in other ways without success. Studies show that a complete yoga program—asana, breathing techniques, and meditation—can peel off the pounds. Asanas for the Chakra System

There are seven chakras, or energy centers, in the body that become blocked by longheld tension and low self-esteem. But practicing poses that correspond to each chakra can release these blocks and clear the path to higher consciousness.

The chakra system provides a theoretical base for fine-tuning our yoga practice to suit our unique personality and circumstances. Traditionally, Indians saw the body as containing seven main chakras, arranged vertically from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Chakra is the Sanskrit word for wheel, and these "wheels" were thought of as spinning vortexes of energy.

Each chakra is associated with particular functions within the body and with specific life issues and the way we handle them, both inside ourselves and in our interactions with the world. As centers of force, chakras can be thought of as sites where we receive, absorb, and distribute life energies. Through external situations and internal habits, such as long-held physical tension and limiting self-concepts, a chakra can become either deficient or excessive—and therefore imbalanced.

Yoga Journal- The Right Combination of Food

Click the link to read on... great article on digestion. Remember, there are so many "styles" or beliefs in how you should eat and what you should eat, but there is NOT one style that works for all bodies. Play around with Paleo, zone, Ayurvedic, etc and see what works best for you. The most important thing is that you find balance in your daily meals. It's a lifestyle not a diet! :)

Mixing too many foods at one time can trigger poor digestion. Here's a practical guide to combining foods appropriately.
By Hale Sofia Schatz

If you've ever tried to practice yoga right after a meal, then you know how uncomfortable your Downward-Facing Dogs and spinal twists can feel with a full or bloated belly. Even if you've finished eating several hours before stepping onto the mat, your body may still be working to digest your last meal, which means less available energy for your practice. To keep your body feeling light and vibrant, look within—to your digestive tract.

The main reason we eat is to provide our bodies with the fuel we need to live—fuel for walking, thinking,, making art, working, playing with our children, and doing yoga. But the very act of digestion also takes energy. You can assist your body's digestion before you even take the first bite of food. If you think of the stomach as a blender that purees food into a molecular soup, then what you eat together at one time doesn't matter because it all gets mixed up anyway, right? Wrong.
